The Story Behind the 1933 Twenty Dollars Saint-Gaudens Gold Eagle
In 1933, during the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt abolished the gold standard and banned private ownership of gold coins. Approximately 445,500 newly minted Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were ordered to be melted down, with only a few surviving illegally.
- 2002 Record Sale: The only legal 1933 Double Eagle sold for $7.59 million, setting a world record.
- King Farouk’s Coin: One specimen once owned by Egypt’s King Farouk was seized by U.S. agents, marking an iconic legal saga.
Officially, all 1933 Double Eagles were destroyed. However, rumors suggest 20 were smuggled out by mint employees or outsiders. The U.S. government spent decades recovering them, leaving only 13 legal specimens (stored in Fort Knox). The sole legal coin sold at auction in 2002.
