The Story Behind This Coin
The 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar holds the prestigious title of the first official silver dollar minted by the United States. Born in the infancy of the nation, it symbolizes America’s quest for financial independence after the Revolutionary War.
Designed by Chief Engraver Robert Scot, the coin features Lady Liberty with flowing hair on the obverse (inspired by classical Roman art) and a small eagle perched on a rock surrounded by wreaths on the reverse. Only 1,758 coins were struck, as the U.S. Mint struggled with primitive technology and limited resources.
Today, fewer than 130 specimens survive, and the finest-known example—graded MS66+—sold for a record-breaking $12 million in 2013, making it the most valuable coin in the world.
⚠️Note⚠️
